Did you know that Worthington is home to the only manufacturer of metal whistles in the United States? Founded in 1956 as Colsoff Manufacturing and purchased by the current owner in 1987, the American Whistle Corporation is proud to manufacture whistles for everyone from the Boy Scouts of America to police officers, lifeguards, college students and referees. In fact, the American Whistle Corporation has been manufacturing the American Classic Gold™, a 24 karat gold-plated whistle made especially for the referees of the Super Bowl, since 1991. The American Whistle Corporation is probably best known for its ability to die-strike your logo into the top of a solid brass whistle, which makes the whistles especially popular for promotional purposes and for distributing to associates and customers as a way to increase awareness of personal safety issues. American Red Cross workers use the whistles at disaster sites throughout the world; policemen direct traffic with the help of a whistle; and hikers and campers carry them as important safety tools wherever they go.

Tours of the manufacturing plan are a fun outing for any age and an opportunity to witness the manufacturing process from raw material to packaged product. During the 45-minute tour, you will find out who buys the whistles, how they're marketed, the history of the company, and more. Workers share interesting facts about the whistles, including everything from how aerodynamics and chemistry affect sound to how the ball gets inside the whistle. Best of all, everyone leaves with a shiny, new American Classic whistle.
