Sassafras Bakery: A Sweet Spot in Downtown Worthington

With the opening of Sassafras Bakery this past August, visitors to Downtown Worthington can now have their pie and eat it, too! From nostalgic American favorites like Aunt Parmelia’s Signature Apple Pie, to savory scones filled with unexpected flavors such as roasted red pepper and goat cheese, Sassafras Bakery’s delicious, made-from-scratch approach is capturing the hearts of Central Ohioans. An Ohio native, A.J Perry learned to bake at a very young age. “From the time I was able to walk, my mom allowed me to measure flour, crack eggs and sprinkle cinnamon on scraps of pie dough,” she said. Staying true to her mother’s practices, she uses only the finest ingredients, and of course makes everything from scratch. Prior to owning her own bakery, Perry spent 10 years as a graphic designer. Her love of the arts and eye for design helps her create confections that are not only decadent, but also beautiful.

Before opening her store in Downtown Worthington, A.J, Perry spent six years representing her business at the Worthington Summer Farmers Market. During that time, she built a clientele of customers from all over Columbus. When she decided to open a shop, Downtown Worthington seemed like the ideal location. “Due to our already strong ties to the community through the Farmers Market, and because of its central location, Worthington was the perfect option for us,” Perry said. “We love the energy on High Street and are encouraged by the warm welcome we’ve received,” she added.

Mindful of their commitment to sustainability, Sassafras Bakery uses hand-selected local products such as milk, honey, peanut butter, seasonal fruits and homegrown herbs. Additionally, kitchen scraps are composted and waste is recycled. The company also uses corn-based recycled packaging and supports the local community through charitable donations.

Sassafras Bakery specializes in an assortment of sweet and savory baked goods, from pies and cookies to muffins, rolls, scones and bars. The shop is located at 657 High Street and open for business Wednesday through Saturday. Be sure to stop in for the “Milk and Cookies” Happy Hour from 3 to 5 p.m. You’ll receive a free cup of Snowville Creamery milk or a mug of Brioso coffee with the purchase of one of their delicious cookies.
