Mrs. Goodman's beach wedding cakeMrs. Goodman's Baking Co. features baked goodies with a dose of nostalgia.

Long before supermarkets added in-store bakeries to their offerings, small mom-and-pop bakeries that featured family recipes, fresh ingredients and friendly, customer service were the norm. Mrs. Goodman's Baking Co. was one of those bakeries, and today it is one of the few of its kind to survive.

Originally from Coshocton County, the Goodman Family moved their bakery to Columbus 27 years ago and set up shop at the Continent. After five years, they moved to High Street where the bakery has been located for more than two decades. Lee and Rachel Alderman purchased Mrs. Goodman's Baking Co. seven years ago, and they're still using the original recipes from Mrs. Goodman.

"The reputation was already there when we purchased the bakery and the recipes," said CEO Lee Alderman. "It's the age-old, secret recipes that have lasted for decades, and the warm, friendly customer service. Everything is made from scratch, including the icing, and you can taste the difference." But you don't need to take his word for it. Mrs. Goodman's Baking Co. was named Best Cake 2013 by CityScene magazine and Best Dessert for the Taste of Worthington in 2012.

Today Mrs. Goodman's Baking Co., located at 901 N. High Street, features a lineup of goodies, including cakes for all occasions, cookies, cupcakes, pies, scones and quick breads. "The recipes have stayed the same, but we do a lot more special decorating on the cakes and cutout cookies," Alderman said. That includes everything from logo cakes (for businesses), to cakes for weddings, holidays, birthdays, graduations and baby showers, to name a few. And not to be overlooked - especially this time of year - are Mrs. Goodman's fluffy pumpkin spice cookies with butter cream frosting.

It's no wonder people drive from all over - some as far as 3 1/2 hours away - to purchase their favorite goodies at Mrs. Goodman's Baking Co. Luckily, the people of Worthington don't have to go far to satisfy their sweet tooth. Open every day except Sunday, so what are you waiting for?
