Penn & Beech Lights Up Old Worthington

You may have noticed that The Candle Lab in Old Worthington has now become Penn & Beech! The local pour-your-own candle shop was purchased by the Indianapolis-based group, and the three Columbus locations are now under the Penn & Beech name.

What hasn’t changed are the high quality candles available in dozens of scents on the shelves. Guests to the new Penn & Beech store will find all their favorites like Chardonnay, English Ivy, Rain, Gardenia, Old Books, Mango, Tomato Leaf – not to mention seasonal favorites like Mulled Cider, Pumpkin Spice, Pecan Pie, Santa’s Pipe, Christmas Tree, Gingerbread.

Guests can also still make reservations to pour their own candles. The helpful guides will walk you through the process, from choosing your container, compiling a list of your favorite scents, choosing three to blend, pouring them in and stirring, decorating your label.

We also caught up sisters-in-law Brianna and Lacey Doles, owners of Penn & Beech, to learn more about the company!

Q: How and when did Penn & Beech get started?
A:
Penn & Beech was founded in the winter of 2016 in Indianapolis, where we started hand-pouring small batches in our homes located on Pennsylvania Street and Beech Street. We then opened our first brick and mortar location at 747 College Ave. in the heart of downtown Indy in early 2018.

Q: What motivated you to move into the Columbus market?
A:
Lacey was actually born and raised in Ohio. In addition to being an OSU graduate, she and her husband also live locally in the Columbus area. Columbus has always been one of our favorite cities to spend time in. Its amazing culture mixed with the food, drink, and entertainment options made Columbus the perfect market for our expansion goals.

Q: What updates are you planning/have you implemented for the Worthington store?
A:
The interior of our new Worthington location is the perfect mix of cozy and modern. We really wanted a sharp, clean white look, while providing a comfortable atmosphere that is still very inviting once you sit down. Everything from the lighting, plants, music, and the furniture has been designed and curated to reflect the minimalist feel of our brand, and the products we produce. Our product assortment in Worthington is a wonderful mix of classic glass jars, unique ceramics, and hand-crafted (reusable) concrete vessels.

Q: What's been the response to guests so far?
A: So far our guests seem to be really loving what we've done with the space, as well as the new products we have to offer. We often receive daily compliments on the look and feel of our store, as well as the attentiveness and friendliness of our staff.

Q: What's unique about Penn & Beech, compared to other candle shops?
A:
One of the biggest things that makes Penn & Beech unique is the sheer size of our custom scent library. We provide over 120 fragrances that have been hand picked and curated to mix and match with each other. Our experience is truly unique, in that our process allows the guest to hop in the driver’s seat and experiment with a wide variety of scents not often found in other shops.

Q: Anything else we should know?
A:
We are so excited to finally be here in Ohio and we look forward to meeting everyone this holiday season!

Welcome to Old Worthington, Penn & Beech!

Here’s a pro-tip for the adults making reservations to pour candles: sneak next door to House Wine for a draft beer or glass of wine that you can take with you in the DORA district.

Candles are usually done within a couple hours, so while they’re curing, you can shop for more gifts, take your DORA drinks and stroll Old Worthington, or find a spot nearby for dinner, from Everest to Dewey’s Pizza, Whitney House to La Chatelaine to Old Bag of Nails.
